Department of Transportation (D.O.T) Exam

Department of Transportation (DOT) Exams

A Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination must be conducted by a licensed medical examiner listed with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. This includes doctors of medicine (MD), doctors of osteopathy (DO), physician assistants (PA), advanced practice nurses (APN), and doctors of chiropractic (DC). We are licensed to perform all DOT exams here at The Health and Wellness Center for your convenience.

A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months. The medical examiner may also issue a medical examiner’s certificate for less than 24 months when a condition must be monitored, such as high blood pressure. As such, as you can count on physical exams for commercial drivers’ license holders by our National Registry Certified Medical Examiner.

Why You Need a DOT Exam

If you are a commercial driver, such as a truck driver, then you are required to have a DOT physical. This physical exam verifies that you are in good condition to operate a commercial vehicle. We also offer treatments for work-related injuries including neck pain that you may have due to your driving job.

What a DOT Exam Covers

It’s important to come prepared to your DOT exam. If you have vision or hearing problems, bring your eyeglasses, contacts or hearing aids. If you have diabetes, bring the most recent lab results from your Hemoglobin A1C (HgAIC) and your blood sugar logs. If you have heart-related issues, bring a letter from your cardiologist outlining your medical history and current medications.

In general, your DOT exam will cover:

• Vision

• Hearing

• Blood pressure/pulse rate

• Urinalysis

• Physical examination
